MIT's Competitive Advantages

MIT maintains several structural advantages that help us implement our investment process.  Our first structural advantage is our stable capital base and long investment horizon.   While other investors are forced to worry about monthly and quarterly returns, we focus on generating gains over many years.  As a result, we are free to ignore short-term market fluctuations and focus on steadily building a portfolio of assets with attractive long-term return potential.  Our time horizon allows us to invest in overlooked or out of favor areas in which the timing of value realization is uncertain but the discount to ultimate value is high.

MIT's second structural advantage is its well-known mission of research and education.  As a center of research, MIT develops cutting edge new insights and technologies that advance human knowledge and fuel innovation-based businesses.  As a center of education, MIT offers students of all backgrounds and circumstances access to an enormous set of opportunities and future possibilities.  In recent years, approximately 60% of MIT undergraduates received need-based financial aid from the Institute and 20% were in the first generation in their families to go to college.  Knowing that their investment returns will support these research efforts and these students, many investment managers prefer clients like MIT.  As a result, we have been fortunate to develop relationships with some of the world's best investment managers.

The Institute's third structural advantage is the MIT community of faculty, students, staff, alumni, and friends.  The MIT community has a wealth of knowledge, experience, and insight that helps us find and evaluate investment ideas.  MIT faculty members help us understand new areas.  MIT students carry out research projects for us.  MIT alumni offer us advice and valuable points of contact throughout the financial and business community.   Perhaps most importantly, many superb investment manager referrals have come to us through the MIT community.
